There are usually two types of Visas issued by the visa department of Tibet. Travel from Nepal to Tibet
While planning to visit Tibet via Nepal is the shortest route to enter Tibet, if you decide to enter Tibet from Nepal, a Group Tourist Visa and Tibet Visa are required. Usually Chinese embassy in Kathmandu issues these required group tourist visas. These visas can be issued either on spot through our Kathmandu-based office or Chinese embassy in Kathmandu Nepal. To visit Tibet from Nepal it is necessary to be a part of an organized tour planned by a recognized touring company/agency. Keep in mind it is to be noted, that this is a legal obligation with no exceptions for this rule. One must have made the following arrangements before leave to Tibet from Nepal: a permitted private vehicle, required travel documents with proper permits, a guide and a driver. It is not necessary to be in group travels one can also and easily be a solo traveler. But they must be a part of an organized tour for traveling Tibet.
From Mainland China, most tourists either fly or take the train to Tibet from Miland. There are direct flights to Lhasa from Chengdu, Xining, Lanzhou, Labrang (Xiahe), Beijing, Chongqing, Xi’an and Kunming. Most travelers prefer to fly to Lhasa from either Chengdu or Xining airport. In addition to Lhasa, you can also fly from Chengdu (Sichuan) to Nyingtri (Linzhi). The train to Lhasa began operating in July 2006. Trains originating in the city of Xining, Lanzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Most people taking the train while traveling Tibet do so from Xining. Xining is the official starting point of the Tibetan Railway and is the nearest major city to Lhasa. Xining, elevation 2300 meters/7500 feet, above sea level also allows travelers to better acclimatize to Tibet’s high elevation. In order to take the train to Lhasa, the travel agency you use will you email with a copy of your permit, which can be printed out to show officials.
